UCLA + USC football Saturdays: how the Westside changes

When the Rose Bowl or the Coliseum is hosting football, LA traffic patterns shift dramatically. Here's what to expect and how to plan if you're not going to the game.

Two LA college football traditions, two different traffic problems. UCLA at the Rose Bowl (Pasadena, gets the 110 north). USC at the Coliseum (Exposition Park, gets the 110 south + the 10). On a game day, the corridor around each venue parks 90 minutes before kickoff and stays parked 90 minutes after.

UCLA at the Rose Bowl

Rose Bowl seats 92,000+. The 110 Arroyo Seco backs up 60-90 minutes before kickoff. Pasadena city streets (Linda Vista, Rosemont, Arroyo Blvd) gridlock. The Tournament of Roses lot is full 90 min pre-kick.

Knock-on effect for non-attendees: any Pasadena → Westside or Pasadena → LAX trip needs 30-40 extra minutes during the game-day window. The 110-S becomes a parking lot in both directions.

USC at the Coliseum

Coliseum seats 78,000+. Exposition Park (the Coliseum + BMO + USC campus) clogs the 110 + the 10 + Figueroa from 90 min pre-kick to 90 min post-game. The 110-N off-ramps at Exposition + Vernon are stop-and-stop.

Knock-on effect: Downtown LA → Westside trips that normally take 25 min stretch to 50+ during game-day windows. The 10-W from Downtown crawls because everyone exiting at Vermont/Exposition stacks back onto the freeway.

How to know what's hitting that weekend

Both UCLA's and USC's home football schedules are published in summer. Six home games each per season (different weekends usually — sometimes they overlap if you're unlucky). Cross-reference with your LA trip dates.

What we do when it's a game day

  • Pasadena pickups: route via the 134 to the 5 instead of the 110
  • Downtown → Westside trips: take Olympic or Wilshire surface streets instead of the 10-W
  • LAX inbound to Pasadena: factor 30-40 extra min into the recommended departure time
  • Coliseum-area pickups (USC + BMO + Exposition Park): pre-stage 45+ minutes early to ensure curbside access

If you ARE going to the game

Pre-book Continental. Same-day rideshare on game day surges 2-3x and the wait time to find an available driver in the post-game zone hits 35+ minutes. Pre-booked Continental: chauffeur pre-stages off the main traffic corridor, you walk out, you're moving within 8-12 minutes vs 60+ for the lot crawl.

Questions about this

Which day is worse — UCLA or USC home football?

Depends where you are. UCLA at Rose Bowl is brutal for Pasadena + the 110-N corridor. USC at Coliseum is brutal for Downtown + the 10/110 interchange + Figueroa. If you're staying in Beverly Hills or Santa Monica, USC's Coliseum games affect you more (10-W stack).

How early should I leave for a USC home game from Beverly Hills?

75-90 minutes before kickoff. The 10-E + Vermont exit stacks early. We sometimes route via Olympic surface streets to skip the freeway crawl — chauffeur picks live based on real-time conditions.

Does the Rose Bowl traffic affect LAX departures from Pasadena?

Yes — UCLA home game days, Pasadena → LAX needs +30-40 min added to standard departure time. The 110-S backs up the entire Pasadena → Downtown segment. We sometimes route via the 5 to the 110 to skip the worst of it.

Can Continental handle multi-stop game days (tailgate + game + post-game dinner)?

Yes — hourly chauffeur is the right call. The chauffeur stages near the venue during the game, picks you up at the curbside coordination spot (pre-arranged), drives you to dinner. One vehicle, one chauffeur, flat hourly rate.
